Character meet and greets are the best!

It's the weekend after Thanksgiving, which means we have entered The Void (as Tim Briody calls it). What does that mean? Studios choose to leave the weekend after Thanksgiving alone, with the only wide releases typically being terrible horror films for some reason. This year was no exception, with Possession of Hannah Grace taking the new opener position for Screen Gems.

Of course, Hannah Grace and her exorcism are nowhere close to winning the weekend. Instead, that honor is going to go to our holdovers, with last weekend's champion, Ralph Breaks the Internet, maintaining the #1 position. It'll do the same next weekend, too, since NOTHING new will be in wide release. Mary, Queen of Scots will expand some (and it has fantastic buzz), but The Void is a real thing.

Ralph Breaks the Internet came in with $5.7 million yesterday, down 73 percent from last Friday. That seems like an awful lot until you remember that last Friday was Black Friday, so lots and lots of people were out and about with opportunity to take in a family film. Its weekend total should be right around $25 million, and then the Disney animated flick will have the remainder of the holiday season to generate some happy, happy box office revenue.

Also dropping precipitously was Creed II, the Rocky franchise film that has great audience reaction and reception. It was down 65 percent from its Black Friday total to $5 million. Look for a weekend total in the area of $15 million as it should take solid advantage of the next several weeks and Michael B. Jordan's growing star power. I remember when I was watching him in Friday Night Lights. It's a pleasure to see the world at large appreciating his work.

The Grinch has a great shot at passing the $200 million mark this weekend as it earned $3.9 million yesterday, down 66 percent from last Friday. Let's call it $12 million for the weekend, though $16 million isn't out of the question.

Now let's jump to new opener Possession of Hannah Grace, which earned $2.6 million yesterday. It's a film of no consequence at all and should finish the weekend with $7 million before disappearing into The Void and the Holiday Extravaganza.

Speaking of abysses, Robin Hood earned just $1.4 million yesterday. In all seriousness, who was the person that went to a boardroom and pitched this thing? And worse, who was in the boardroom and said, "Good idea!" $4.2 million is the best it can hope for this weekend.

Green Book might have a little bit of traction after being named Best Film by the National Board of Review. There's a lot of discussion about the whitewashing of the story, though, so I'd expect a lot of backlash here as we get deeper into the awards season. After $1.1 million yesterday, its weekend total should be near $3.5 million.
