Three new wide release films enter the marketplace, but the Joke's on them. Indeed, Joker will spend a second week in a row at the top of the box office charts.
With a decline of 56 percent, Joker fell to $17 million yesterday. Considering that it had a pretty massive Thursday preview factored into its first Friday total, that hold is pretty darned good. Look for Joker to end its second weekend with a grand total of $52.9 million.
The best finisher out of the new releases was animated film The Addams Family, which had a terrific look and style, but terrible, terrible reviews. From the co-directors of... Sausage Party, this animated flick modernized the Addams Family story to place it amidst reality television nemeses. Anyway, the film earned $9.7 million yesterday from more than 4,000 venues, and should finish the weekend in the $32 million range or so.
Will Smith's star power doesn't go nearly as far as it once did, as evidenced by the mere $7.5 million that Gemini Man earned yesterday. The Ang Lee-directed film received terrible reviews and looked overly weird to boot, so hopes could never have been terribly high. Let's call it $20 million for the weekend and probably not speak much of it from here.
Finally, Jexi, a comedy version of Her featuring the delightful Adam Devine earned just $1.1 million yesterday. It was not screened for critics, but now that reviews are coming in, the number is only 15 percent fresh. Some of the critical responses were downright hostile. It's only going to earn $3 million or so, quickly falling out of the top ten.
The good news is that next weekend brings Maleficent 2 and Zombieland 2, so we're assured of at least some good box office numbers in the coming days.
